Owners Elizabeth Woodhouse and Shane Ingram, a husband-and-wife team, have taken a Greek Revival mansion and put in place an exceptional restaurant. Constructed in 1908, this Edwardian manse is imbued with such architectural delights as leaded-glass windows. Expect some of the best service in town from the experienced and gracious waitstaff. Many in-the-know guests, if the weather agrees, select a table on the wraparound veranda.
The menu is so pleasing and well prepared that some of the most enthusiastic patrons have acclaimed this the best restaurant in North Carolina. Though we applaud, we don't go that far. Nevertheless, everything we've ordered here has been enjoyable, full of flavor, and made with very fresh-tasting ingredients. There is much imagination in the cookery here.
Our most memorable dish was North Carolina pheasant, glazed with molasses and a chili sauce. Loin of rabbit is wrapped in bacon and stuffed with a sausage flavored with orange and rosemary; the jus that accompanies the dish is laced with Southern bourbon. The monkfish platter comes with a curry coconut broth and a dash of kumquats. For dessert? Try the divine Key lime or chocolate caramel bread pudding. All desserts are made on-site.
